The chain should be lubricated once a month using a bicycle chain lube or oil.
Bicycle chain lube is available online, in bike shops, or sometimes in big-box stores.
To lube the chain, place a small amount of lube on each link by running the oil quickly over the whole length of the chain. Take the bike for a short spin to get the oil into the links. Then use an old rag to wipe off excess for the chain. The oil is only needed on the interior linkage, and excess oil will attract grime.
It is not recommended to use WD-40. Although WD-40 is a great anti-seize product, it does not provide adequate lubrication.
