On some of our bikes, the brake levers and gear shifters are simply rotated back to protect them during shipping.

You just need to loosen the clamp bolt with a 5mm allen wrench, rotate the brakes & shifters forward to the desired position, and retighten the bolt. 

You may also need to rotate the gear shifter. As with the brake lever, loosen the clamp bolt with a 2.5mm allen wrench, rotate the shifter to the desires position, and retighten the clamp bolt.
